Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott) has confirmed that she has been let go from The Young and the Restless.

"Last week I lost my childcare. This week I lost my job! It all works out because I don't need a babysitter if I'm not working," Davidson wrote on Twitter. "It's official. I've been let go from Y and R. Not really sure exactly why, but in the big picture I guess it doesn't really matter!"

Davidson originated the role of Y&R's Ashley in 1982. She remained with the show for four years before taking a two-year break. When she returned to Y&R in 1988, it was on a recurring basis. Eleven years later, Davidson was again signed to a contract. In a surprise move in 2006, Davidson was cut from the Y&R cast. Shortly thereafter, however, Y&R's sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful, reached out to Davidson, and the actress moved her character from Genoa City to Los Angeles. It wasn't a far move for Davidson; The Bold and the Beautiful tapes just across the hall from The Young and the Restless. In 2008, Davidson headed back to The Young and Restless.

In addition to her work as Ashley on Y&R and B&B, Davidson also appeared on Days of our Lives -- simultaneously in five different roles. Davidson started off playing just one role, Kristen Blake in 1993. Three years after that, she added Susan Banks. Later, Davidson played Susan's three siblings, Sister Mary Moira Banks, Thomas Banks, and Penelope Kent.

The multiple roles helped earn Davidson an Outstanding Lead Actress nod at the 1998 Daytime Emmys.

There are whispers that Days of our Lives might make a play for Davidson now that she is out of work at The Young and the Restless. Soap Opera Digest reports that insiders have indicated that the NBC soap is interested in having Davidson return.

Meanwhile, Davidson's co-star, Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers) took to Twitter to voice her support for Davidson.

"My gorgeous friend @eileen_davidson was not fired!! She was 'let go' FOR NOW! She is a shining star! Don't want her perceived in a bad way," Stafford remarked.

A final airdate has yet to be announced.
