Gary grew up in an alcholic family. His father was a drunk, and so was his brother. Gary eventually became an alcholic, as well. Gary was a police officer on The Bay City Police Department, as well as the trainer for the police academy. This is where he met his future wife, Josie Watts. Josie helped Gary with his drinking problem. The two eventually became lovers. However, Josie did not like Gary's rule breaking at the department. After it seemed like Gary and Josie were peaceful together, two rivals of Gary's came to Bay City: Buck Mason and Blair Baker. Buck Mason was revealed to be the killer of Gary's partner and Blair Baker was the cop that Gary testified against at a trial.
Blair Baker caused Gary's suspenison from the police department. Blair shot Gary's love, Josie. After being fed up with all of the happenings at the police department, Gary opened up a detective agency. Gary and Josie's first wedding attempt failed because Josie's mother, Sharlene, was shot by Cody Murcer. However, Gary and Josie finally made it down the altar and became man and wife. Gary found out that Josie was pregnant with his child, but she later miscarried after being pushed off a building by Toni's rapist, Rayburn.
Recently, Gary and Josie wanted to adopted a homeless girl, Rain, but they became too attached to the child because her grandmother came back to claim her. Josie left for F.B.I. training and returned in February. However, Josie is keeping a secret from Gary about his family. After Josie returned from Quantico, Gary believed that Josie was having an affair, but hasn't proved it. Gary is very suspicious of his wife.
