If you watched last night's Super Bowl, you might have caught a glimpse of something else pretty super. Sashe Calle (ex-Lola Rosales, The Young and the Restless) appeared as Supergirl in a trailer for the upcoming The Flash movie.
"Holy sh!#! This is so so wild! It's so beautiful and exciting to finally share this with you all," Calle wrote in a post on Instagram. "I have fallen deeply in love with Supergirl. Getting to know her and feel her has been one of my greatest honors. This moment is so so special. [...] If there's anything Supergirl has taught me, it's HOPE. Anything is possible. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!"
It was two years ago this month that Calle learned she had landed the highly coveted role. More than 400 actresses auditioned for the role, and Calle found out that she was selected during a video conference call with director Andy Muschietti, who filmed the surprise announcement to share with fans.
In being cast as Supergirl, Calle becomes the first Latina to play the character. It was a groundbreaking moment that Y&R's then-executive producer Anthony Morina and now-executive producer/head writer Josh Griffith noted at the time. "On behalf of everyone at The Young and the Restless, we'd like to congratulate Sasha Calle on making history and being chosen to play the first Latina Supergirl. The role of Supergirl is a perfect fit for someone of Sasha's immense talent and we wish her all the best as she takes on this groundbreaking role," the show said in a statement.
In addition to Calle, The Flash stars Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton. It is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 16.
